Rian Johnson is the writer, director, and co-producer of the 2019 American thriller Knives Out. Knives Out had its world premiere on September 7 at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, and on November 27 Lionsgate Pictures distributed it in theatres across the country.

Knives Out Movie Short Storyline
Rich mystery author Harlan Thrombey’s family is there for his Massachusetts mansion’s 85th birthday celebration. Fran, Harlan’s housekeeper, discovers him dead with his throat cut the next morning. Despite the fact that private investigator Benoit Blanc is recruited undercover to look into Harlan’s death, Lieutenant Elliot and Trooper Wagner still consider it to be a suicide.
Blanc discovers that Harlan’s relationships with his family were strained. On the day of his death, Harlan threatened to expose his son-in-law Richard for having an affair with his daughter Linda, to stop Joni’s allowance for stealing from him, to fire his son Walt from his publishing company, and to fight his grandson Ransom. Unbeknownst to Blanc, Harlan’s nurse, Marta Cabrera, mixed up his prescriptions, fooling her into thinking she had overdosed him on morphine.
Unable to locate the antidote, she left Harlan with just minutes to live, according to reports. Marta was instructed to fabricate a fake alibi, and Harlan then stabbed his own death in order to protect Marta’s family from attention (her mother was an illegal immigrant). Marta was following Harlan’s directions when his mother noticed her, but she confused her for Ransom. Marta can’t lie without throwing up, so when questioned, she responds truthfully but incompletely.
