Soul Movie Storyline
Piano player Joe Gardner lives his goal of performing jazz professionally while working part-time as a music teacher at a middle school in New York City. His mother Libba advises him to take a job offer for a full-time teaching post when it is made. Joe finds out that renowned jazz performer Dorothea Williams is looking for a new member for her quintet and is holding tryouts at a jazz venue. Dorothea employs Joe for the performance that night after being impressed by his piano skills.
As Joe leaves, he becomes distracted by his enthusiasm and slips into a manhole at the bottom of the sewer. Joe discovers himself as a spirit travelling into the “Great Beyond,” an eternity. He attempts to flee, unwilling to die, but instead finds himself in the “Great Before,” a place where spirits develop identities and hobbies prior to being born on Earth.
In the Great Before, counsellors—all of whom go by the name Jerry—use foster spirits to assist unborn souls get ready for existence. Once the badge is entirely full with personality characteristics, it allows the spirit to travel to Earth. Joe, who is mistaken for a mentor, is tasked with teaching a spirit called 22, who wishes to stay away from Earth.
